The Contribution of MAAS to Sustainable Urban Mobility

Mobility as a service (MaaS - Mobility as a Service) allows the integration of various forms of transportation into a single mobility service accessible on request through digital platforms. MaaS can play an important role in promoting multimodal mobility, the transition to more sustainable modes of transport and more efficient use of transport networks. The “Strategy for smart and sustainable mobility” adopted by the European Commission in December 2020 recognizes the fundamental role of digital solutions in achieving multimodality in urban and suburban areas. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on transport and urban mobility, in particular on the use of public transit systems, but at the same time it has contributed to the emergence of more flexible travel habits, for example due to the increase in work-from-home arrangements. On the demand side, MaaS applications can represent a tool to help users in the choice of sustainable transport solutions and optimize their travels with a view to flexibility; at the same time, these platforms allow transit companies and private operators to evaluate and optimize supply. The meeting will involve transport managers, public transit companies, and mobility experts to discuss possible innovations towards a more sustainable urban mobility.
